1. Why is it so important for me as a soap maker to be a member of the EU Soap Quality System?
If you make cosmetic products, you are legally required to use a quality system. And if you were to choose from all the systems currently available, you’d do well to pick the EU Soap Quality System. It gives you many options at a very low price. Besides complying with your legal obligations, you can also get advice about your specialty, i.e. the making of soap. Also, you aren’t limited to a few recipes. Instead, you can choose from millions of recipes saved in the system database.
2. Who has devised and developed the EU Soap Quality System?
The EU Soap Quality System was devised and developed by brothers Dr Michiel WE Teunissen and Martinus LJ Teunissen B Eng at the turn of the century. Michiel is a pharmacologist and has gained experience in quality systems while working at pharmaceutical companies like AstraZeneca and Roche, while you’ll know Martinus as director of Gildewerk BV. Their goal was to set up an affordable and accessible system for Gildewerk customers so that traditional soap makers could continue plying their trade, despite the European cosmetics regulation coming into force.
3. How can you offer the EU Soap Quality System at such a low price?
This is down to Gildewerk’s ingredients. In other words, new testing is not necessary for every new member. Also, all members cover the costs together. Thanks to this joint effort, the cost per member can be kept low.

9. Are ingredients not supplied by Gildewerk never covered by the EU Soap Quality System?
They are not, but exceptions are possible subject to certain conditions. For example, our system already offers simple options such as adding donkey’s milk and – again subject to conditions – your own dried herbs. In theory, the addition of other ingredients – like your own parfum – should be possible, but this is more complicated and therefore more expensive. So, other ingredients can be used. However, it’s not just about cost. Such products must also approved through testing, and positive results cannot be guaranteed in advance.
